Here is Mediterranean Commune, a project born out of a profound question: What shared and unique experiences do we, as Mediterranean people, have despite living in different geographies?

The Mediterranean region is not just defined by its beautiful coastlines and cuisine. It is a diverse tapestry woven with history, culture, and shared experiences. Though separated by borders, languages, and histories, we are all connected by the same sea, a body of water that has shaped our lives, carried our stories, and continues to bind us in unseen yet powerful ways. This project was initiated to reflect on the experiences of marginalized Mediterranean communities, migrants, and displaced peoples, especially as the Eastern Mediterranean carries the largest burden of displaced populations globally. The Mediterranean is also recognized as the cradle of civilization, a place where people from all walks of life have met and created together.

The project also seeks to foster artistic and cultural collaboration, celebrating the region’s diversity while addressing its social, political, and cultural challenges. By highlighting unique identities through creativity and storytelling, we aim to create a space where connections are made, and meaningful conversations unfold. Our archival practices focus on interviews with artists, storytellers, researchers, and cultural practitioners, exploring themes of history, memory, migration, and creative journeys.

The goal is to build a collective archive that not only respects the Mediterranean’s diverse cultures but also captures the region’s people’s relationship with the sea and how crises shape our lives and creative processes.
